Avoid costly life insurance pitfalls: under-insurance, hiding medical histories, ignoring inflation, mixing investment with protection, and nomination oversights.
### 1. Severely Under-estimating Required Coverage
The most common mistake Indian breadwinners make is taking a ₹5 Lakh or ₹10 Lakh life policy and believing their family is protected. If monthly household expenses are ₹50,000 (₹6 Lakhs/year), a ₹10 Lakh sum assured will be wiped out in less than 2 years!
**Rule of Thumb:** Your total life coverage must be at least **10x to 15x of your current annual income**, plus an additional amount to cover active home loans or child education milestones.
2. Non-disclosure of Medical History & Smoking
Section 45 of the Insurance Act provides insurers specific investigative rights. Never hide past hospitalizations, family history of cancer/heart attacks, or casual smoking habits to save a small amount on premiums. A non-disclosed medical history gives insurers legal grounds to reject a claim when your family needs it most.
3. Buying Purely to "Save Tax" in March
Rushing into random policies in the last week of March just to exhaust Section 80C limits results in lapsed policies and mismatched financial terms. Plan your insurance deliberately as part of an integrated 20-year wealth strategy.
4. Forgetting Nomination Updates
Always ensure your nomination is updated following marriage, childbirth, or changes in family circumstances. Registering NEFT mandates upfront prevents delayed claim settlements.
